Programme Application
Eligibility
- The applicant must hold at least a bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline such as Chinese art history, museum management, archaeology, conservation, museum education, museology and etc.
- The applicant is required to be proficient in language of the destination country.
- There are no restrictions regarding the age and nationality of the applicant.
- The applicant with more experiences will be awarded the "J. S. Lee Memorial Senior Fellow".
Award Scope
- The Programme provides funds to the Fellow to cover accommodation, living expense as well as expense for visa, round-trip airfare and medical insurance. The applicant will be requested to provide a preliminary budget plan for the Fellowship project, should the applicant is shortlisted for a selection interview. The Programme Office will provide further details when the applicant is invited to attend an interview.
- To encourage Western museums in supporting deserving staff in participating in the Programme, selected Fellow's affiliated museum might be granted a salary subsidy to hire temporary staff to take over duties of the selected Fellow. This subsidy grant is subject to the needs on a case by case basis.
- The Programme does NOT fund course study, dissertation research and the collection of dissertation related materials.
Award Details
- The Fellowship duration should be ranged between four to twelve months.
- The Fellow is required to be stationed at a museum / an institution in the place outside of his / her habitual residence. (Applicants who are now temporarily living abroad can also apply for the Fellowship.)
- During the Fellowship, the Fellow will have the opportunities to conduct research, participate in activities of the attached museum / institution and exchange with its staff.
- The Fellow needs to begin his / her project within one year after the award has been made. Any changes in the Fellowship project date, duration or contents, differing from the application, must seek the approval of the Programme Committee through a written request. The Programme Committee reserves the final decision on whether to continue the financial support to the changed project.
- The Fellow is responsible for ensuring that he / she complies with all the necessary immigration and health requirements of the country he / she intends to go for the Fellowship. The Fellow will need to obtain the visa before any fund is disbursed.
- The Fellow must submit written reports on the work accomplished within three months after completing the work undertaken during the Fellowship tenure. The Fellow is also requested to share the research results and experiences gained during the Fellowship within two years after completing the project. Such sharing can be in form of publication, work portfolio or speech related to the project carried out during the Fellowship.
Application Procedure
- Before submitting the application, the applicant should contact the prospective Hosting Institution from the list of Programme Participating Institutions to arrange Fellowship project.
- The applicant can obtain the contact information of the prospective Hosting Institution by submitting written requests, together with a Fellowship proposal and curriculum vitae, to the Programme Office by email. The Fellowship proposal should include 1) the intended objectives, 2) contents and 3) time allocation of the proposed project as well as 4) demonstrations of how it relates to the applicant's professional goals or research interests.
- Should the applicant currently temporarily living in a country that is not his / her habitual residence and considering applying for a Fellowship attachment in that country, he / she should provide the Programme Office with a Fellowship proposal and a curriculum vitae as well as background information on his / her nationality, reasons why he / she is temporarily residing in that country, his / her future plans and other relevant information. The Programme Office will have a preliminary evaluation and have the final decision on whether to accept the application.
- The applicant is encouraged to contact the prospective Hosting Institution at least one month before the application deadline. The Institution might reject the applicant who contacts the Institution too close to the application deadline, or unable to provide the Fellowship proposal and curriculum vitae.
- The applicant should discuss with the Institution on the Fellowship proposal to match the expectations of both of the parties. The Institution will carefully assess each application, which the Institution might decline the applications it considers not suitable. The Institution has no obligation to indicate the reason why the proposal is declined.
- An "Application Form" and "Recommendation Forms" from two referees are required for the application. The relevant documents can be downloaded in this page.
- In response to the influence of the Covid-19 pandemic, the completed "Application Form" and "Recommendation Forms" should be submitted by email to application@beishantang.org before the application deadline. Confidential recommendations must be emailed to the above email address directly from the referees.
- All application materials should be completed in either English or Chinese. Late or fax application submission will NOT be considered.
- Confirmation e-mail will be sent to acknowledge the receipt of the application.

Selection
- Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend interviews in May. The Programme Office will ensure the shortlisted candidates receive the interview invitation.
The Award
- The application result will be announced in June.
- The Programme Office will notify all the applicants the outcomes of their applications.
- The Programme Committee's decision in granting any award is final. Reasons will not be given for granting an award or not.
- Enquiries about the application progress and application results will not be handled in any circumstances.
