Research on Chinese and Western Glass Collection at The Palace Museum

2020/2021 Fellow Dr. Shelly XUE and her fellowship supervisor Ms. ZHANG Rong shared the 6-months fellowship experience at The Palace Museum in Beijing. This talk presented Dr. Xue’s latest research on the 19th century Chinese and Western glass and revealed some of the beautiful pieces of the glass collection at The Palace Museum. As the host supervisor, Ms. Zhang provided the context of this collaborative research project and shared her hosting experience during Dr. Xue’s fellowship attachment.

Ms. Zhang Rong graduated from the History Department of Nankai University, majoring in Museum Study. From 1985 to 1998, she worked in the Department of Conservation at The Palace Museum specializing in the management and research of 30,000 cultural relics of 6 categories, including ancient lacquerware, enamelware, glassware, silverware, bronzeware, and tinware. She served as Deputy Director of the Department of Palace Life and Imperial Ritual from 1998 to 2002, Deputy Director of the Department of Antiquities from 2002 to 2004 and Director from 2004 to 2010. In July 2010, she was appointed as Chief Librarian of the Palace Museum Library. She earned the title of Researcher in 2005 and was awarded “Distinguish Specialist” in 2008 by the Ministry of Culture of People’s Republic of China.

Adjunct Curator for Asian Glass, The Corning Museum of Glass

Dr. Shelly Xue is the Adjunct Curator for Asian Glass at the Corning Museum of Glass, and Associate Professor at Shanghai Institute of Visual Arts. She received her Ph. D. in Glass from the University of Wolverhampton (U.K.). She has long been engaged in the historical research and practice of glass art, with a focus on Chinese art from the Qing dynasty and the East-West cultural exchange. She has published various books on the subject, including Qing dynasty Chinese Glass, a Chinese version of A History of Glass Forming and Techniques of Kiln-formed Glass. Dr. Xue has been invited to lectures and international conferences in the U.K., U.S.A., the Netherlands, Sweden, Taipei and Hong Kong. She is also a glass artist. Her work has been collected by art institutions in Europe and China, such as the Victoria & Albert Museum, London.
