Museum education departments strive to meet the changing needs of students. The global pandemic has introduced new challenges and opportunities for museums serving school-aged audiences, whose needs have changed as a result of long periods of isolation and learning interruptions. Social and emotional learning is a top priority for many teachers. Join the educators from the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco to learn how on-going collaboration with teachers can help museums to stay responsive to students’ needs and the strategies they have adopted to engage students in multisensory experiences in the galleries that center on the students’ voices and foreground social-emotional learning.
Ms. Deborah Clearwaters
Director of Education and Interpretation | Asian Art Museum of San Francisco
Deborah is Director of Education and Interpretation at the Asian Art Museum, where she leads the development of educational materials and public engagement about Asian art and culture for diverse audiences. Deborah holds a master’s degree in Japanese art from the University of Maryland, where she specialized in modern Japanese art. During her 24-year tenure at the museum and in partnership with local Asian and Asian American communities, she has developed engaging events, award-winning interpretive materials, and built a renowned online repository for teaching about Asian art and culture (education.asianart.org). She has developed new interpretive planning processes that enrich exhibitions with community voices, multi-sensory and digital experiences, including accessible tools for visitors with disabilities, and visitor feedback opportunities. She leads the museum’s re-history programming, which critically examines the history of the museum and its collections with consideration of race, colonialism, and power.
Ms. Margaret Yee
Manager of School and Teacher Programmes | Asian Art Museum of San Francisco
Margaret graduated with a B.A. and M.A. at Stanford University, she then taught high school English and humanities for over 20 years before becoming a museum educator in 2018. As the Manager of School and Teacher Programmes at the Asian Art Museum, she enjoys working with docents, storytellers, and teachers to create fun, engaging tours and art activities for K-12 school groups. She also works closely with teachers in developing curriculums and programmes based on the museum’s exhibitions and collections. She is excited to develop more curriculum on contemporary Asian American art in the coming years.
