The Bei Shan Tang Legacy: Chinese Seals Lecture Series

15 October 2024 (Tuesday) to 10 January 2025 (Friday)
1/F, West Wing, Art Museum, The Chinese University of Hong Kong
Livestreaming via Zoom | Conducted in Cantonese or Mandarin

Chinese seals date back to the Shang Dynasty and remain in use today. Historically, they served as tokens of authenticity in official administrative processes and contractual agreements among officials, civil organisations, and individuals. Over time, their typography and design have evolved, leading to the emergence of seal carving as an art form celebrated for its philosophical and aesthetic appeal.

Since the establishment of the Art Museum at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Bei Shan Tang has generously donated approximately 1,800 Chinese seals, spanning from the Qin Dynasty to the modern era, to the museum. The museum’s dedicated research and curatorial team has conducted extensive studies on these treasures, delving into their significance within the broader narratives of social, economic, cultural, and aesthetic developments. This research is showcased in the exhibition “The Bei Shan Tang Legacy: Chinese Seals” currently on display at the museum.

In conjunction with the exhibition, a lecture series will feature five distinguished international scholars who will illuminate the historical, artistic, and typographical evolution of Chinese seals, from their ancient origins to the intricate art of seal carving.
