Collecting and Displaying China at the National Museum of Scotland: Opportunities and Challenges
The last 150 years of collecting from China have resulted in a sizeable collection with many outstanding pieces at the National Museum of Scotland. More recently, a number of contemporary acquisitions have been added to the historical collection. Its first dedicated East Asia gallery opened in 1996 and a new East Asia gallery is currently in development as the final stage of the Museum's fifteen-year transformation and renovation. The new gallery will present a display of China, Japan and Korea from past to present across four themes and some new acquisitions have been specifically made for the gallery. Along with all these exciting developments, we have also faced many challenges. This presentation will share my own experience in the role of the Chinese curator in collecting and displaying China.
